Troubleshooting

recd can't hear me or see my screen

Almost always a macOS permission, or one that hasn't taken effect until recd restarts.

Check what recd thinks

Click the menu bar dot. If you see Allow Microphone… or Allow Screen Recording…, that permission is missing. Settings shows the same at the top, under Needs permission. Click it to ask again.

Fix it in System Settings

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security.
  2. Under Microphone, turn recd on.
  3. Under Screen & System Audio Recording, turn recd on.
  4. Quit recd and open it again. A new Screen Recording permission only takes effect after a restart.

recd is on but still doesn't work

macOS sometimes holds on to a stale permission after an app is replaced with a new version. Reset it:

  1. Quit recd.
  2. In System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, select recd and remove it with the − button. Do the same under Microphone.
  3. Open recd and allow both again, then restart recd once more.

If recd doesn't appear in the list to remove, you can reset it from Terminal instead:

tccutil reset ScreenCapture io.recd.app
tccutil reset Microphone io.recd.app
