A recording stopped when the display slept or locked

macOS stops screen capture when the display sleeps or the screen locks. recd saves what it had. Keep the display awake for long recordings.

recd records through macOS's screen capture system, which stops when the display goes to sleep or the screen locks. When that happens, recd saves everything recorded up to that moment and tells you: Recording stopped: The display went to sleep. A meeting that stops this way also shows Couldn't record this meeting under the menu bar.

Nothing recorded before that point is lost. If the whole Mac went to sleep or shut down, recd recovers the recording next time it opens.

Keep the display awake

For a long meeting, especially when you're not touching the Mac:

  • System Settings › Lock Screen: set Turn display off when inactive (on battery and on power adapter) to a longer time, or Never while you record.
  • Don't lock the screen (⌃⌘Q) while recording.
  • On a MacBook with no external display, keep the lid open. Closing it puts the Mac to sleep.
  • Or keep the display awake from Terminal for as long as the command runs, and press ⌃C to end it:
    caffeinate -d

Starting again

The stopped recording is saved like any other. Start a new one to carry on: meetings and screen recordings can't be resumed, they become two recordings.
