Warnings while you record
What each of recd's warnings means and what to do. A warning means the recording carries on unless it says it stopped.
recd keeps an ear on every recording. When something is off it beeps and shows a short message: in the menu bar menu, at the top of the full window, and for meetings in a panel under the menu bar. Warnings are grey, not red: red in recd only means recording.
Microphone
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your mic was almost silent. Check the Microphone choice in this menu. | After a recording: the mic barely picked anything up. Pick the right mic in Settings › Recording › Microphone. See My mic was silent. |
| Your mic is almost silent. | During a meeting. Check you're not muted at the mic and that the right mic is chosen. |
| Your microphone stopped sending audio. The recording is still going. | The mic disconnected. Often a Bluetooth headset. See Bluetooth. |
| The mic track stopped. This meeting is recording without you. | During a meeting: your side isn't being recorded. Reconnect the mic, or stop and start again with another one. |
The other side of a call
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Didn't hear the other side of the call. Make sure the call's sound plays on this Mac. | After a meeting. The call's sound went somewhere recd can't hear, like your phone. |
| Not hearing the other side of the call. | During a meeting. Check the call app's speaker is this Mac, or headphones connected to it. |
| The call's sound track stopped. The other side isn't being recorded. | During a meeting. Stop and start again if it doesn't come back. |
| The computer's sound stopped arriving. The recording is still going. | During a screen recording. |
Disk space
| Message | What happens |
|---|---|
| Not enough free space to record. | recd won't start until there's at least 512 MB free. |
| Disk space is getting low. | Recording continues, but stops if the disk fills. |
| The disk is almost full, so this recording was saved with what fit. | recd stopped and saved what it had. |
When a recording stops by itself
Recording stopped: followed by the reason means capture ended early. What was recorded up to that point is saved. The common reasons:
- The display went to sleep. See A recording stopped when the display slept.
- Screen recording permission was turned off. See Permissions.
- Video stopped arriving or Audio stopped arriving. macOS stopped sending the screen or the sound.
A meeting that stops this way also shows Couldn't record this meeting under the menu bar, so you notice even if you weren't looking.
When a recording doesn't start
Recording didn't start followed by the reason. Usually it's a permission. See recd can't hear me or see my screen.
Clearing a meeting alert
Meeting alerts stay until you press OK. Until then the menu bar dot shows an exclamation mark instead of the dot.
