Recording

Record a screen, window or app

Choose a whole display, a single window or an app, or every display at once. Your voice and the computer's sound come along.

Record one screen, window or app

  1. Set the mode to Screen: in the mini player's pop-up, the menu bar menu, or Settings › Recording › Default mode.
  2. Press the dot or ⌥⇧⌘R.
  3. macOS shows its screen picker. Click what you want:
    • A display records everything on it.
    • A window records just that window, even when others cover it.
    • An app records all of that app's windows.
  4. Recording starts. The mini player shows what you picked, such as Studio Display or Safari.

While the picker is open, the mini player says Choose….

What's in the video

  • The screen, window or app, at its full resolution, 30 frames a second.
  • Your microphone. Pick which one in Settings › Recording › Microphone. See Choose your microphone.
  • The computer's sound.

Screen recordings save as .mp4 files. They don't get a transcript or AI notes: those are for meetings.

Record all your screens

Choose All screens as the mode, or press ⌥⇧⌘A from anywhere. recd records every connected display at once, one video each, and saves them together in a folder:

2026-10-17 1400 Recording/
    2026-10-17 1400 Recording - Screen 1.mp4
    2026-10-17 1400 Recording - Screen 2.mp4

Screen 1 is the display with the menu bar, and it carries the sound. In the sidebar the set shows as one recording, and its link opens the folder.

Before you start

recd checks your free disk space. If there's less than about 512 MB it won't start, and it tells you how much is left. See Warnings while you record.
