Phone recordings
Record on your iPhone
Save a recording from your phone into recd's Inbox in Google Drive. recd on your Mac files it under Meetings, transcribes it and writes the notes.
There's no recd iPhone app yet. What works today is simpler: anything your phone saves into My Drive › recd › Inbox gets picked up by recd on your Mac, filed like a meeting, transcribed, and given AI notes.
What you need
- The Google Drive app on your iPhone, signed in to the same Google account as Google Drive for desktop on your Mac.
- recd running on your Mac. It checks every signed-in account's
recd/Inboxonce a minute. If your Mac is asleep or recd is closed, recordings wait in the Inbox until it's back.
Make a one-tap Shortcut
A Shortcut on your phone records and saves straight to the Inbox. Build it once in the Shortcuts app with five actions:
- Record Audio. Set it to start immediately and finish on tap.
- Format Date: the current date, with the custom format
yyyy-MM-dd HHmm. - Set Name: name the recording with the formatted date followed by
Phone. - Save File: turn off Ask Where to Save and choose Drive › My Drive › recd › Inbox. If Drive isn't listed, open the Files app, tap Browse › ⋯ › Edit and turn Drive on.
- Show Notification, such as Saved to Drive, so you know it worked.
Name it Record for recd. To get to it fast, add it to your Home Screen (Share › Add to Home Screen), or on an iPhone 15 Pro or later, put it on the Action button (Settings › Action Button › Shortcut).
Or save any audio file there
Voice Memos, another recorder app, a file someone sent you: save or move it into recd › Inbox with the Files app or the Drive app. recd takes .m4a, .mp3, .wav, .aac, .caf, .aiff, .mp4 and .mov.
What shows up on your Mac
A recording saved at 9:41 AM on 17 October as 2026-10-17 0941 Phone.m4a becomes:
recd/Meetings/2026-10/2026-10-17 0941 Phone/
2026-10-17 0941 Phone.m4a
2026-10-17 0941 Phone - Transcript.txt
2026-10-17 0941 Phone - Notes.docx
- It's filed in the same Drive account whose Inbox it arrived in.
- Replace Phone in the Shortcut's name with something else, like Lunch with Sam, and the folder is named that.
- A file with any other name keeps its name and uses the file's date.
- The AI notes are written if you've set up AI notes.
Allow a minute or two from stopping on the phone to seeing it in recd: the Drive app uploads, Drive for desktop syncs it down, and recd waits until the file has stopped growing.
Nothing is deleted
Once filed, the phone's original moves to recd/Inbox/Filed. A file recd can't read moves to recd/Inbox/Couldn't file instead. Nothing is deleted.
How the transcript differs
A phone records everyone on one track, so the transcript labels everyone as Speaker rather than Me and Them.
