Choose your microphone
Pick the mic recd records from. It remembers your choice and falls back to the Mac's default when that mic isn't connected.
Open Settings › Recording › Microphone and choose a mic. Mac default follows whatever macOS uses for input.
recd remembers your choice. When that mic isn't connected, it uses the Mac's default until it's back.
Why choose one
The Mac's default input is often the wrong one: a Bluetooth speaker's mic across the room, a monitor's built-in mic, or AirPods you forgot were connected. Choosing a mic explicitly avoids recordings where you sound far away, or aren't there at all.
Check it's working
The mini player shows the mic's name and a five-bar level meter. Speak: the bars should move. In a meeting the line reads Mic + call audio, because the other side comes from the computer's sound.

The menu bar menu also shows what you're recording with which mic while a recording runs, for example Studio Display · MacBook Pro Mic.
